The DBCA Weeds Program is a small team within the Ecosystem Health Branch dedicated to protecting Western Australia's bushland and biodiversity from the impacts of invasive plants. We support regional staff across the state by providing practical advice, training, tools and resources to help deliver effective weed management on DBCA-managed lands.
With backgrounds in weed ecology, conservation science and natural resource management, our team is passionate about helping people tackle today's weed challenges while preparing for the emerging weeds of tomorrow.
Within DBCA, we
- Support on-ground weed management by working with regional teams to improve weed management practices and build capability across the department;
- Deliver training and guidance staff—we develop and maintain weed management training, resources and practical guidance for staff undertaking weed management activities;
- Advocacy for weeds—we advocate for the impact of weeds on bushland and offer advice on weed identification, prioritisation, management planning and emerging weed threats;
- View threats holistically by working alongside programs managing the impacts of invasive animals and pests; and
- Lead strategic projects—we coordinate projects that improve knowledge, systems and tools to support long-term protection of Western Australia's natural landscapes.
And outside of DBCA, we
- Work with other agencies and the community—we collaborate with government agencies, researchers, Traditional Owners, land managers and community groups for better weed management outcomes and share knowledge of weeds; and
- Guide policy and assist researchers—we represent Western Australia's conservation lands on state and national committees, contribute to weed policy and biosecurity discussions, and support research that improves the way weeds are managed across Australia.
Above all, we are passionate about protecting bushland from the impacts of weeds!
